thought I would put to bed all the rumours regarding about Cobham by explaining the folowing points.
I took on the major task of re-building a club that was in its death throws. Although finishing bottom the first year, I at least stopped it from folding.
Last season I had high hopes of a big improvement and had it not been for higher clubs poaching our better players we would have achieved this. Still 5th from bottom is still an improvement even though nothing to shout about.
I wonder if the top teams will ever know the time, dedication and hard work constantly needed trying to improve a club, that except for a couple of people has no other help or resources.
I was the only person at our club to bring in any sponsorship money for new kit, tracksuits and general income. I took training twice a week, produced a programme, recruited players, re-painted the ground, got the kit washed, took on the vice chairmans position and tried tirelessly to improve the club.
I managed to arrange the merger with Merley Youth which hopefully now secures the future of the club.
In January I developed an illness which forced me to have to take a break in April but came back for the last 3 games because Dave Rhodes who had taken over, left for a 3 month holiday.
I have had to retire from management completely now due to ill health but was looking forward to being involved in some way as vice chairman of the club I had given so much to.
Imagine then when at the AGM of which I could not attend due to a hospital appointment in London the next day, I was not voted in. I had to find out a week later from an outside source. No call from Chairman or Secretary !
The moral of my story is that you never get out of football what you put in. My wife was telling me that for 20 odd years ! As a manager the feeling of winning is indescribable. I didnt get too many of those at Cobham but really enjoyed having banter with most of the clubs we played. I was really surprised how the league has improved. I wasnt everyones cup of tea but always gave 100% in all I did. Thanks to all the players who played for me over the years.
I will miss being involved but wish all the clubs and Cobham well for next season.
Still think the best teams were Ham Rec, Chickerill and Swanage.
