Have referees lost there sense of humour of they been told to not smile and joke during games... Seems that referees often take everything far too serious and have no sense humour which can at times lead to pointless and OTT bookings many of which would not have even merited a booking!!!! Let me know your thoughts!!!!

Couldnt agree more. Sometimes your not even answering back just asking why they made a decision and you either get a sarcastic reply or a yellow.

Not just Sundays either, we had a player booked last week for shouting "you're having a laugh" in frustration when caught offside... and of course we can't appeal against it.

Well aparently from next year. All football leagues from tier1-9 Will all be brough into line so in essence all will be refereed to the same standard and any punishments will be dished out by the FA not the local FA

I think they are a joke… we had a player who got booked on a baking hot day for taking a drink on the sidelines about a metre off the pitch this whilst the ball was out of play…The referee booked the player for going off the pitch without his permission

I agree with you no ref no game. But I think were entitled to complain when so many refs are power seeking biggots. How many refs are frustrated footballers or just idiots that want to make a name for themselves. Its shame so many of us dont want to get into after we finnishing playing

As a matter of interest, who would you say were the worst referees in Dorset? In general I find they are not too bad. Of course they make mistakes, but tell me a player who doesn't? I'm an ex-player who now manages a team, so I see it from a slightly different perspective now. As a player and manager I've had differences with a particular referee, who does seem to have it in for me for whatever reason. It is frustrating for everyone I'm sure. You can get the arrogant, egocentric ones, the incompetent ones, those who apply every law to the letter; even though they say the most important rule over and above all is to apply common sense. Then again there are some very good referees who maybe just have an off day now and then, just like most of the players they are in charge of! Often players and managers can be hyper critical and often the criticism is justified, but don't gang up on them en-masse. Name and shame and name and praise the worse and best. I'm sure you'll find lots of disagreement from club to club, player to player. A starter for 10 as a good 'un is Mr C.Sorbie. Let's discuss folks!

We recently had a referee that I swear must have been about 16 years old. He had the whole dress so he must be qualified but I kid u not he could not handle the men's game... does anyone know the minimum age for referees surely it has to be at least over the age of 18???

Nope, once you get to the age of 16 then you can referee open-age football. However, DCFA do monitor these young refs closely and make sure that they are given advice if they're seen to be struggling. Nothing wrong with reffing mens games at the age of 16, any new referees will find the job hard at first no matter what their age is - simply because its a bloody hard job to do! The best tool to improve a refs performance is experience remember, after a season or so most refs find their feet and officiate in a way that suits the game, rather than simply going strictly by the laws - ie cautioning for someone having a drink off the pitch! (that did make me smile!) As for a sense of humour, I think you need it as a ref otherwise you take far to much stick from the players. They tend to shut up once you give them a few comments back about their performance when they start missing shots or delivering passes that float out for a throw-in! ;D

Being an ex-player, I understand the frustration that players have with referees, but now i'm on the side line I can also see that some players are quite often looking for problems with the ref, but I think , in my opinion, that referees in general are respected a lot more by players if they just talk to players throughout the game and just give simple explanations. i.e. Push on No 7or pulling shirt - reds free kick etc. Players seem to be more agrieved if they have to guess what the free kick was given for.

Its true it seems a lot of refs have an unfruitful life outside of football and seem to choose to be ref so they can aquire some kind of fake sense of authority. Thats the way they come across. If they took the time to deal with the players like adults and explain things to them they might get on better

I reffed on sundays only last season in dorset and quite honestly overall got a good response from most players officials and spectators. However there are some players and teams that however hard you try from talking to, joking with, trying not talking to etc etc you just cant win.heh,heh. Also i can say that reffing is a very subjective thing and overall i think the standard of reffing in non league football is fairly avarage. However the level of abuse is generally constant and sometimes downright nasty and i think many players couldn't do it,which is why it is so difficult to recruit refs. And yes i did play myself at senior level and yes i have a very fruitful life outside of reffing!! Also the quality of football is so dire some sundays i lose concentration. But hey even on cold, wet, windy days,we are still there for you.

Im not complaining about refs their are some who try their best and are ok.
Im talking about the ones with a superiority complex who use matches as a way to make themselves feel important not for the love of the game

I have to say playing on Saturdays in the Bournemouth league and Sundays in Dorset that generally Dorset referees are little less card friendly and seem to be fairer. Just my opinion!?!?!?
